I really enjoyed the beginning of "The Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes. The first few pages offered a very interesting perspective on the concept of time and the interpretation of it. I have always wondered time is real or of it is a social construct. I have always thought that it could possibly be something that humans have made up and used for years just because it is helpful. The first few pages of this novel were kind of a voice to my thoughts. It let me know that I am not the only one who has thought about this. I have always agreed that when people are doing really well, time seems to go by very fast but when they're not doing so well, time goes by very slowly. This is fascinating.
Tony Webster then goes into his experiences in high school and tells the readers that he cannot fully remember everything. He tries to fill in the gaps. We do not know whether these gaps are self serving or not. I personally found it humorous that Adrian Finn is the smartest of the four friends. They are all philosophical and all really enjoy philosophy and debates but for some reason, the three of them feel somewhat inferior to Adrian Finn. I thought that Adrian's response to the teacher saying what history is was on point. I have always agreed that history is mainly composed of bias. People tend to put their own spin on events when reporting or documenting. I feel like it is almost impossible not to do it because everyone has their own opinion on everything. People also only think highly of people who share their ideals and beliefs so it makes sense. I guess it is just a sad truth about society.
I also thought that Tony's relationship with Veronica was hilarious. He has not had much experience with girls prior to her so his attempt at figuring everything out is entertaining. I felt so bad for him when he went on a trip with Veronica's family and knew that all of her family members were judging him. It is a horrible feeling when people are desperately trying to get a gage of who you are. You feel like they are judging everything you do.
Overall, I am enjoying this novel thus far. It is one of my favorites we've read.
