First Post

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes seems so far to be a book more on par with The Kite Runner.  I have just started, but I am interested in the newfound relationship between Tony and the gang and Adrian.  Adrian is the new kid, he is quiet and shy, but intellectually dominant and kind.  Though they incorporate Adrian into their group, they do not really seem to like Adrian as he is, it seems to be more of a jealous motive for their fast friendship.  Tony and his friends see how well Adrian takes in information, dishes it out, and how easily he can make funny comments that get him out of situations.  They envy (to a slight degree), Adrian’s mental aptitude and desire it for themselves.  They associate with Adrian mainly because they want to surround themselves with someone who has qualities they desire.

As the story continues, I am interested to see how the relationship between not only Tony, Colin and Alex changes, but how each of their relationships with Adrian change over time.  So far it seems like they will become closer and closer until Adrian is essentially one of their group, but right now, he is kind of on the perimeter.  They like him, but don’t consider him one of their best friends yet.  Not only will their relationships change short term, but down the road when they are adults, things will be radically different than the current part of the novel.
